Trigger Warning: Domestic Violence
The holiday season is meant to be a time of joy and cheer as families come together. Unfortunately, cases of domestic violence increase during the holidays. Everyone deserves to feel safe with their loved ones year-round. For some, that means taking steps to leave a dangerous situation. Here are some tips for post-separation survivors on how to develop an action plan to keep yourself safe this holiday season.
Tips
Identify High-Risk Locations: Be aware of spaces that are difficult for you to be in—locations that could be triggering or places close to abuser.
Include Your Support System in Your Safety Plan: Work with your support system to create a plan in the event you need to remove yourself from an unsafe situation. Include code phrases to communicate with loved ones if you feel threatened.
Update Your Loved Ones on Your Travel: When you are traveling, share your location and plans with a trusted loved one. Let someone know immediately if you feel like you are in danger. Notify the authorities and a trusted individual as soon as possible.
Prioritize Self-Care: Plan for periods of rest and mindfulness throughout the holidays. Going to bed early, making time to watch your favorite TV show, or meditating are great options. Before the holidays start, make a list of self-care activities you want to try!
