The third year of the Student Athletes With Academic Goals (SWAG) program kicked off in January and this year, we doubled our impact by partnering with two schools: Niagara Falls High School and Health Sciences Charter School! Through this 8-week immersive program, students explored healthcare career pathways while building essential academic, leadership, and personal development skills.
At Niagara Falls High School, 12 students successfully completed the program. The program at Health Sciences Charter School had 10 students successfully complete the program, demonstrating strong engagement and enthusiasm throughout the experience. Students also participated in a Peer-to-Peer Workshop led by our PATCH Teen Educators, strengthening communication and leadership through interactive, hands-on learning experiences.
Both schools visited D’Youville University for a campus tour and participated in workshops designed to support growth in both academic and athletic settings. During the body language workshop for athletes, students explored how nonverbal communication, confidence, emotional control, and leadership contribute to stronger teamwork and performance. They also gained valuable insight into projecting professionalism, reading social cues, and communicating effectively under pressure. Students also took part in a mental health and athletics session led by Rita Anderson, where they learned strategies for managing stress, building confidence, improving focus, and strengthening emotional resilience. The session emphasized the connection between mental wellness and performance, while equipping students with practical coping and communication tools for everyday life.
To mark the completion of the SWAG program, students from both schools were recognized for their growth and achievement throughout the 8-week experience. The celebration highlighted key areas of development, including leadership, communication, teamwork, emotional wellness, and career readiness.
We extend appreciation to our community partners, facilitators, and supporters whose contributions made this year’s program possible. We are proud of all 22 students who completed SWAG and look forward to their continued success in school, athletics, and beyond!
