Building Health Literacy Together

We are excited to share our newly revamped Health Literacy Toolkit! This updated version builds upon our previous toolkit with updated content, clearer explanations, and an improved digital format, all designed to better serve our community. We are excited to share this enhanced resource to help individuals and families make informed decisions about their health.

Understanding your health should not feel confusing or overwhelming. Health literacy is the ability to find, understand, and use health information to make informed decisions for yourself and your family. When health information is filled with unfamiliar terms or complex systems, it can create barriers to care. Our goal is to help break down those barriers so individuals are confident in making health decisions.

Our Health Literacy Toolkit was designed to explain essential health topics in plain language and in a way that feels approachable and practical. The main sections of the table of contents include:

  • What Is Health Literacy?: An overview of what health literacy means and why it matters for individuals and families.

  • Health Insurance: Clear explanations of coverage types, common terms like premiums and deductibles, and how insurance works.

  • Annual Well Visits: What to expect during preventive appointments and why routine care is important, even when you feel healthy.

  • Advocating for Your Health: Tips for communicating with providers, asking questions, and participating confidently in healthcare decisions.

  • Mental Health: Information on emotional wellbeing, recognizing stress, and healthy coping strategies.

  • Maternal Health: Key information about care before, during, and after pregnancy.

  • Resources: Additional tools and trusted sources for further support.

Because the toolkit can be fully digital, it is interactive and easy to navigate. Readers can click directly on referenced resources and additional information, making it simple to explore topics more deeply and access helpful tools in real time! We also have printed copies available at upcoming community events!

Whether you are reviewing your insurance coverage or learning how to better advocate for yourself in healthcare settings, this toolkit is meant to be a practical and empowering resource.

The newly updated Health Literacy Toolkit can be found on the Resources pages of our website and is also attached below. We encourage you to share with your friends, family, and community members!
